On Dante’s footsteps
Dante Alighieri is considered the father of Italian language. The Divine Comedy describes his imaginary journey through hell, purgatory and paradise. This journey through cities as Verona, Mantua, Padova, Ravenna and Florence among others is a proposal to follow his path, discovering the artistic inspiration he followed to paint an image of Italy.
Day 1 / MANTUA
After the arrival, transfer to Mantua, birthplace of Virgil, the poet considered a master by Dante himself.
Lunch with the introduction to the expert. Short walking tour to visit the centre of the fascinating old town and of the astonishing Palazzo Ducale, with the wonderful paintings of Andrea Mantegna.
Transfer to Verona for dinner and overnight.
Day 2 / VERONA
Visit the wonderful city with a focus on the places where Dante lived. Alighieri spent 7 years of his life here, hosted by the Scaliger family. Dante dedicated the Paradise, the last part of his Comedy, to Can Grande della Scala, lord of Verona during the first part of the XIV century.
Lunch and visit the highlights of the city, like the roman amphitheatre Arena and the Juliet’s balcony. Dante was the first writer that put the names of the families Montagues and Capulets together, in a line of the Purgatory.
In the late afternoon, transfer in Valpolicella, to Serego Alighieri vineyards, for a special wine tasting in the possessions of Dante’s descendants.
Dinner at leisure and overnight in Verona.
Day 3 / LAKE GARDA & CASTELS IN TRENTINO
Visit the jewel of the lake, Sirmione with references to another Latin poet (Catullus) with the visit of the ruins of the Roman villa. From Sirmione, transfer by private boat to Peschiera, a town described by Dante in his Comedy.
Lunch in Peschiera and then transfer to visit of one of the castles visited by Dante, possessions of a family friend, named Guglielmo da Castelbarco (Castel of AVIO or Castel Beseno)
Return to Verona for dinner and Overnight.
Day 4 / PADOVA, POMPOSA & RAVENNA
Enjoyed some free time in the morning, after lunch leave Verona to travel to Padua.
During the transfer, visit the Soave Castle, a medieval fortress in which Dante was hosted during his exile. In Padua, visit the Scrovegni’s Chapel, the most important ciclo of frescoes of the Italian middle ages, painted by Giotto. There are a lot of cultural references to the idea of afterlife that Dante used in his Comedy.
Transfer to Romanesque abbey of Pomposa, in the middle of nowhere. Here Dante contracted malaria, returning to Ravenna from an embassy to Venice.
Transfer to Ravenna for dinner and overnight in Ravenna.
Day 5 / RAVENNA
Morning dedicated to the visit of the city that hosted Dante in the last years of his life. Included, the magnificent roman mosaics of San Vitale and of Sant’Apollinare nuovo.
After lunch, excursion to Gradara, the medieval fortress in which Dante set the tragic story of Paolo and Francesca
Dinner at leisure and overnight in Ravenna.
Day 6 / BOLOGNA & FLORENCE
After breakfast transfer to Bologna, a city full of references to Dante’s writings. The visit will also include the history of the world’s oldest university and references to the famous bolognese gastronomy.
After lunch, departure for Florence. Hotel accommodation and late afternoon tour to introduce the city with its highlights and links to Dante’s life (Dante’s house, Palazzo Vecchio, Santa Maria del Fiore).
Dinner in and overnight in Florence
DAY 7 / FLORENCE
In the morning, visit of the “other” Florence: walking through Ponte Vecchio to reach the Oltrarno district.
After lunch, leaving for the Chianti region for a wine tasting and a relaxing walk in the vineyards.
Return to Florence for dinner at leisure and overnight.
Day 8 / TUSCANY
After breakfast prepare for a day of exploring Dante’s favourite places. Start from the world-famous mediaeval architecture of San Gimignano, follow the narrow roads to the ancient fortress of Monteriggioni and proceed to Siena.
Lunch in the city centre.
Walking tour of the City discovering the places where the poet lived and work following the marble plaques with the poet’s verses that were inspired by places and personalities from Siena.
Dinner at leisure in Siena and late return to Florence
Day 9 / TUSCANY
Relax in Florence. Enjoy some free time to visit the city and the shops.
Lunch at leisure.
Transfer to Fiesole, to discover this lovely Italian village whose foundation was cited in Dante’s Poem
Dinner in a private palace and overnight in Florence.
Day 10 / Departure
Transfer to the airport.
