Ancient traditions and crafts in Sardinia
The island of Sardinia is a privileged place to understand the ancient Mediterranean ceramic and textile traditions. Here, both techniques have been preserved and re-evaluated thanks to contemporary esthetical adaptations. Cagliari, the fascinating capital of the island, hosts some amazing ceramic exhibitions, and in the interior cities of Oristano and Samugheo, Textiles Museums allow to discover these ancients traditions while in Orgosolo there is a mask exposition that explains the famous carnival tradition of Mamuthones.
Three half-days ceramic workshop in an experience Hotel in Oliena with time to discover and relax the environs.
Day 1 / CAGLIARI
After meeting the expert guide at lunch, time to discover the city center with a walking tour. The city’s history goes back thousands of years, from prehistoric times to the reign of the Savoy. The Castello quarter sits perched on its highest hill and boasts ancient bastions that today are the heart and soul of nightlife, and picturesque streets lined by grand old homes: Palazzo Regio and Palazzo di Città, as well as the Cathedral of Santa Maria. The medieval towers – dell’Elefante and San Pancrazio – that stand guard at the entrance to the castle are well worth notice. Villanova connects to the Castle quarter via the stairway of the bastion di Saint Remy.

Day 2 / CAGLIARI
Enter the ancient tradition of ceramic art with a visit to the Archaeological museum and then the unique small Museum of Mattonelle, a small museum in the medieval neighborhood of Cagliari, where Ms. Mercedes presents the story of the majolica tiles from aristocratic homes of the ancient city and their journey.
After lunch, enjoy an afternoon to discover the ancient neighborhood of Cagliari.

Day 3 / ORISTANO & SAMUGHEO
Travel north, abandoning the magnificent coast to enter the wild center of Sardinia. Time to admire the breathtaking views on the way to Oristano, founded by the ancient Phoenicians. Visit of the city center and lunch in the Piazza. Visit the Antiquarium arborense, in the Diocesan Museum, to admire ancient ceramic pieces.
Travel to Samugheo, to discover the textile tradition of Sardinia.
Transfer and check-in at the hotel in Su Gologone and welcome dinner with an introduction to the master Ceramist in charge of the workshop.
Overnight in Oliena.
Day 4 / OLIENA
Time to swim in the secret coves of the Golfo di Orosei national park. Enjoy a private boat tour of the beaches that are exclusively accessible from the sea to discover the remote beaches.
Afternoon workshop to learn the basics of traditional ceramic making.
Day 5 / OLIENA
Morning workshop.
Free afternoon to enjoy the facilities and relax.
Overnight in Oliena.
DAY 6 / ORGOSOLO & MAMOIADA
Visit Orgosolo, chosen by Feltrinelli (an influential Italian publisher and businessman) as the possible capital of the utopic revolution, with time to admire the colorful murales created in the late ‘60s. Transfer to Mamoiada to visit the museum of Mediterranean masks, admire impressive masks and learn about the 2000 years old carnival ritual: Mamuthones of Mamoiada.
Afternoon Workshop and free time.

Day 7 / NUORO
Visit the birthplace of Nobel Prize Grazia Deledda and the Museum of Costumes, to admire the displayed artworks and to discover the traditional costumes of the island.
Lunch; an expert lead tour of artisans with time to discover ancient and currently in use working techniques used to shape iron, ceramics, and gold.
Overnight in Nuoro.
Day 8 / Departure
On the way to the Airport, stop at Santa Cristina in Paulilatino to visit the most representative and best preserved Nuragic well temple of Sardinia.
